Research Reports

What Is A Research Report?

A research report is a complete documentation of analysed information that has been collected by the researchers and statisticians during their research work. The report accounts for all the processes that have been used at different parts and time frame of research work, the data that has been collected in any form be it a survey or any other method of data collection and any sort of findings or conclusion that has been made by conducting the research.

Research reports are framed across all sorts and areas of research work but their main agenda is to clearly communicate the proceedings that are ongoing or were made at the time of research. Therefore, all research reports cover all the more similar topics and sub topics to show the research work.

As said that the main agenda of research reports is to show the proceedings of research work, you can think that this can be done in any manner. But that is not the case! An ideal research report comes with a proper format and structure which clearly tells us the objective of doing research and the final conclusion, while recording all other evidence and data supporting the final conclusion in an orderly and organised manner.

Components Of A Research Report

The ideal research reports comes with a proper format and structure. There are certain components that every research report ideally contains in itself. Lets look and understand each component in proper order-

  • Title Page

A title page is the first page in the research reports which contains the topic on which the research is being conducted, along with the name of all the researchers that gave their input in completing the research.

  • Table Of Content

A table of content is like an index page of a book which gives us the header of all the sub topics in the research report along with the page numbers on which readers can find that particular sub topic.

  • Research Reports Summary/Summary

You must be thinking that summary tells us the intact on point information and is shown at the end. Well yes, summary in a research report also gives an intact information but is not shown at the end. The main objective of a summary is to provide an overview of the research. This is the component from which we can say that research reporting has actually started. A person reading the summary will know what the research is about and can decide for oneself if he or she wants to continue reading the report.

  • Research Introduction/Introduction

The next component of a research report is introduction in which the researcher is introducing the subject or topic on which the research is being conducted. The researcher can describe the current situation of the issue being researched on and can make a thesis for the same which at the end of the research can help in drawing conclusion that with all the evidence provided in the research abide with the thesis or is going against it, drawing a different conclusion.

  • Research Methodology

Research methodology is a very crucial component of a research report as it gives out the information on ways or methods that have been used for conducting the research. For instance it tells us if the research is qualitative or quantitative in nature, the target audience used for collecting data and many more minute details like these.

  • Literature Review

Another component in line of a research report is literature review which simply contains a small paragraph on other research that has been done on the same topic as the current research itself. This section can give us the past insight of the researchers on the topic and the situation during different time frames during which all the other researches were conducted.

  • Analysis

This section of the research report contains all the data collected for the research. If the research is quantitative in nature then this section also shows all the different mathematical and statistical calculations that have been done to draw the conclusion for the research. In one sentence, this section acts as the evidence to whatever the conclusion has been drawn for the research.

  • Conclusion

This section acts as the final section where the research work actually ends. After all the data collection and analysis, this section gives us the final answer to the research objectives. If there is any thesis made at the beginning of the research, this section gives us the final result and tells us if the thesis assumed was right or wrong.

  • References

This section does not necessarily relate with the research as it contains the links that have been referred to during the research. For instance it contains links to all the research papers that have been mentioned in the literature review section or if the data collected for research is secondary in nature then it contains the link to the source from which the data has been collected for the research.

Tips For Writing A Good Research Report

Formulating your research report in the manner mentioned in the above section is not enough. There are certain small tips that you need to keep in mind while writing your research report in order to stand out from the rest of the research work submitted.

  • Have all the information handy before actually getting to write your research report.
  • The format of the report will be the same as mentioned in the above section but keep your formatting based on the target audience for your research.
  • Research report as a whole document is huge in itself so try to add only important and intact information in each sub topic of your research report.
  • Be very cautious about your writing style, grammar and punctuations.
  • Include appropriate graphs and figures for your data and analysis as each individual will not have time to read through the data and analysis and will prefer to have significant understanding of research in one look.
  • Make sure to proofread your research report once you finish writing it.
  • Have a working model in your mind to avoid completing the report and realising that all the major objectives for which research is conducted is missing.
